The U.S. welcomes travelers from all over the world who come to the U.S. for business, tourism, study, and other purposes of visitation. Our aim in the consular section is to facilitate travel to the United States for all qualified applicants! Please keep in mind the following when applying:

We encourage all applicants to remember to “Apply Early, Apply Right” (tizao shenqing, haohao shenqing)! They should file their application and schedule their interview well in advance of their travel date, preferably a month or two beforehand. This is especially important given the high volume of visa applicants we receive in the spring and summer months. Applicants should consult our website for complete and up-to-date visa guidelines and announcements. In addition, we have a number of social media platforms, including our Sina blog, micro-blog, and monthly web-chats that prospective applicants can use to stay connected with the latest visa information, available to all and free of charge. For study abroad questions, of course, EducationUSA China, based in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, has an extensive range of online resources to draw upon.

Student applicants should keep the following in mind when they are applying for their visas: First, they should be able to demonstrate—whether in their applications, interviews or supporting documents—that they are credible students. Second, they need to be able to show that they intend to go to the U.S. for the sole and temporary purpose of pursuing full-time studies Third, they need to demonstrate that they or their family has the ability to support their tuition and living expenses over the course of their program of study.

          DO IT YOURSELF, BE YOURSELF!

A final admonishment is for each applicant to “Do it Yourself, Be Yourself” (ziji zuo, zuoziji)! Applicants should take full responsibility for their applications and interview preparation, instead of entrusting the process to visa consultants who may not have their best interests at heart, and whose information and tactics may prove expensive, inaccurate, and even fraudulent.

Applicants should present their situation truthfully, neither under-playing nor over-inflating their representation of their background and travel intentions. In some cases, consular officers have seen applicants who might have been credible applicants if they had simply been honest in their portrayals of their background and motivation for U.S. travel. Unfortunately, some applicants may have been advised to either embellish or play down certain aspects of their situation, resulting in inconsistencies or inaccuracies in their self-representation that may ultimately have worked to harm rather than help their chances of receiving a visa.

Student applicants, for example, who take the “DIY” approach are more likely to find a good match in the schools they apply for, which means that they have a higher likelihood of success in their visa applications, but also in their studies in the U.S.

In general, by presenting themselves authentically, all applicants allow consular officers to accurately assess their situations and come to an informed visa decision.
